🌍 Australia · Czech Premium Pale Lager · One of 15 Czech Premium Pale Lagers in hopIQ

Czech Mates is a Czech-style pale lager brewed in Burleigh Heads together with a traditional brewery from České Budějovice, whose lager yeast it uses. The mash follows the Czech double decoction method, and the beer matures for up to eight weeks before packaging, with Saaz as the only hop. It pours deep gold under a dense, creamy head. Decoction brings malt flavours of bread crust and light caramel, balanced by the spicy, herbal and floral character of Saaz and a rounded bitterness that fades into a clean finish.

Aroma

The nose leads with the characteristic spicy and floral profile of Saaz hops, accompanied by subtle herbal notes that suggest gentle earth and resinous undertones. Beneath this hop character lies a rounded, bread-forward malt foundation from the double decoction mash, with light caramel sweetness adding depth without dominance.

Taste

The palate opens with soft malt sweetness—bready and subtly caramelized—which is immediately balanced by Saaz's distinctive spicy and floral hop expression. A rounded, measured bitterness builds through the mid-palate, never aggressive, and integrates cleanly with the malt foundation to create a harmonious whole.

Finish

The finish is clean and crisp, with the bitterness receding to a dry, refreshing conclusion. A faint echo of bread and spice lingers briefly before fading into a smooth, quenching aftertaste.
