Maranea

Tap to rate

Maranea is a gluten-free lager brewed from barley malt and Marano maize, which Birrone grows on its own land and has milled locally into grits. It succeeds Maranella, the brewery's earlier maize beer. The gluten is bound during fermentation and drawn off from the bottom of the tank. The beer is aromatic and round, with only a hint of bitterness. Blonde, bottom-fermented, 5.4 %.

The overall impression is bright and inviting, with the light straw color reflecting the use of pale Malz and maize adjunct.

◌ Aroma

The nose is understated but refined, with clean, grainy notes arising from the barley Malz foundation. Marano maize contributes a soft, slightly sweet corn-derived character without assertiveness. Noble hop varieties provide a delicate herbal whisper, while the lager yeast remains unobtrusive, allowing the grain bill's inherent gentleness to emerge.

Mid-palate remains soft and approachable, building a balanced framework without astringency. Bitterness is restrained at 22 IBU, offering just enough edge to prevent cloying character while maintaining the beer's easygoing nature.

About Pale Lager

Style guide · what to expect · how to find alternatives

What is a Pale Lager?

Euro Pale Lagers are clean, refreshing lagers with 4–5.5% ABV and IBU 10–25. Soft malt sweetness, light hop bitterness and high carbonation make them supremely drinkable.

Finding a similar Pale Lager

hopIQ matches by flavor profile — not just style label. A beer with the same smooth-drinking, smooth, malty character as Maranea will score highly even if brewed in a different country or under a different sub-style name.
