The Celebration Porter

Tap to rate

The Celebration Porter marked Anspach & Hobday's eleventh anniversary and launched on 27 March 2025 in cask, keg and can. It returns to the brewery's porter roots by a different route: inspired by its first birthday beer, The Three Threads, a large share of amber malt brings a toasty aroma and some residual sweetness, and Invert Sugar No. 2 adds dark fruit and burnt toffee. Relying less on highly kilned malts, it pours deep ruby red rather than black.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for The Celebration Porter

◎ Appearance

Deep ruby red with amber highlights, significantly lighter than a classic black porter—a visual signature of the amber malt-forward approach. The beer pours with moderate carbonation and forms a tan head that settles to a thin collar with modest lacing. Clarity is opaque throughout, as expected from the style.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with toasty, biscuity amber malt character, warm and inviting without harshness. Dark fruit notes—raisin and plum—emerge alongside burnt toffee and molasses from the Invert Sugar No. 2, creating a complex sweetness. Noble hop character remains restrained, allowing the malt and adjunct layers to dominate.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with caramel and toffee sweetness anchored by the amber malt's toasted grain foundation. Mid-palate reveals subtle dark fruit depth and a gentle burnt sugar character, balanced by moderate but clean bitterness (33 IBU) that prevents cloying. The finish is dry and grainy, with lingering toffee notes fading cleanly.

◑ Finish

The finish is dry and of moderate length, with residual burnt sugar and grain character persisting without heaviness. A clean aftertaste leaves no astringency, making the 4.5% ABV feel refreshing despite the porter's depth.

Serve at 10–13°C. Too cold mutes the roasted complexity that makes a good porter worth drinking slowly.
