Stone Brewing
Stone Brewing was founded in 1996 by Greg Koch and Steve Wagner in San Marcos, north of San Diego, and moved to Escondido in 2005. Its bitter, resinous IPAs helped shape the West Coast style, and Arrogant Bastard Ale followed in 1997. A second production brewery opened in Richmond, Virginia, in 2016. Sapporo bought Stone in 2022; in 2026 the brand passed to Firestone Walker and Duvel Moortgat USA, and packaged beer is now brewed in Paso Robles and Kansas City. The small brewhouse at Liberty Station in San Diego still brews for Stone's own taprooms.
