Robert Hoppe founded the brewery in 1872 as 'Zum Auerhahn' in Hasserode, today a district of Wernigerode on the northern edge of the Harz; the capercaillie still marks the brand. Ernst Schreyer took over in 1882, and from 1920 the company traded as Hasseröder Brauerei AG. In GDR times the beer was drunk mainly around Magdeburg, and after 1990 it became the most widely consumed beer brand in eastern Germany. The brewery belongs to AB InBev and brews with water drawn from the Harz.
