Dragonhead

Tap to rate

Dragonhead is a pitch black stout, dark and intense: bitter chocolate, roast coffee and spicy dark fruit in the nose, rich malt and barley, both roasted, on the palate, and a smooth finish of bitter chocolate and spice. Challenger and East Kent Goldings add a complex bitterness. It is the brewery's tribute to the Vikings and their legacy on Orkney; the first thing of theirs to touch the islands would have been a long ship's dragonhead.

◐ Taste

Entry is full and malty, with roasted barley and rich Malz character coating the palate immediately. The mid-palate sustains a balanced bitterness from both hops and roast, neither aggressive nor meek, while dark chocolate and coffee continue to define the sensory center. At 4% ABV, the beer achieves impressive body and complexity without alcohol heat, making the 34 IBU register as refined rather than sharp.

◑ Finish

The finish transitions smoothly from bitter chocolate to a lingering spice signature, with gentle roast tannins drying the mouth over several seconds. The aftertaste remains dry and composed, free of astringency, leaving a pleasant cocoa-and-herb memory.
