Old Freddy Walker

Tap to rate

Old Freddy Walker is a dark strong ale and, at 7.3 %, the strongest beer of Moor's core range. Dried fruit and toffee stand out against a deep, complex malt character, and natural carbonation gives a refined finish that hides some of the strength. It is among the brewery's oldest and most decorated beers: Champion Winter Beer of Britain in 2004 and again in 2017, and overall champion at the SIBA South West awards in 2016 and 2025. It is sold in single 440 ml cans and served from cask.

◎ Appearance

Deep amber to dark brown in color, with excellent clarity and a firm, tan head that clings to the glass with persistent lacing. The natural carbonation is evident in a steady stream of small bubbles that rise cleanly through the body.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with dried stone fruit and raisin notes, underpinned by a rich toffee and caramel sweetness. Behind these lie layers of complex malt character—earthy and slightly toasted—with only subtle hop presence that doesn't compete with the malt-driven profile.

◐ Taste

The palate reveals a full-bodied entry with pronounced toffee and dried-fruit flavors leading into a mid-palate marked by deep, layered malt complexity. Low bitterness (24 IBU) allows the malt sweetness to dominate, creating a smooth progression that belies the 7.3% strength.

◑ Finish

The finish is refined and lingering, with toffee and malt character persisting without harshness. The natural carbonation imparts a gentle, polishing quality that leaves the beer feeling sophisticated despite its considerable alcohol content.
