Both Barrels

Tap to rate

Broadside aged in former bourbon barrels over cherries and bottled at 9%. Each year the brewers blend beer from the barrel stock and refill what they take with fresh Broadside, so that maturation continues from one release to the next. Cherry, vanilla, oak and whisky notes sit on top of the fruitcake flavour of the base beer. A light acidity lifts the weight of the blend.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with vanilla and oak derived from the bourbon barrel aging, complemented by subtle cherry notes that add a winey character. Below these wood-forward elements lies the fruitcake foundation of the original Broadside ale—dark dried fruits, caramel, and toasted grain. A whisky warmth threads through, giving the aroma pleasant complexity without harshness.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with caramel and dried fruit character from the base ale, then bourbon barrel vanilla and oak unfold in the mid-palate. Cherry and subtle whisky notes add depth and a gentle acidity that counterbalances the beer's fullness. Bitterness is restrained at 35 IBU, allowing the rich barrel and fruit character to dominate without becoming cloying.
