Strong Suffolk Dark Ale

Tap to rate

Strong Suffolk Dark Ale is a blend of two beers. Old 5X is brewed to around 12% and matured for at least two years in 100-barrel oak vats; BPA, a deep-coloured, full-bodied fresh beer, is added shortly before filling. The result is a 6.0% ale that is dark, fruity and oaky. It was sold as Strong Suffolk Vintage Ale until 2013 and is known in the United States as Olde Suffolk English Ale.

◎ Appearance

Deep mahogany to dark brown, with substantial opacity throughout. The head forms thick and tan, settling to a persistent collar with fine Schaumhaftung that clings to the glass walls. Carbonation is moderate, releasing slow, deliberate bubbles characteristic of a matured ale.

◌ Aroma

Complex and layered, with prominent dried stone fruit and plum notes that emerge from the long oak maturation. Woody undertones—vanilla and subtle tannic oak—frame a gentle base of toffee and dark Malz sweetness. A light sherry-like warmth develops as the beer opens, without sharp alcohol burn.

◐ Taste

The palate enters smooth and full-bodied, with ripe dark fruit flavours meeting soft oak tannins in the mid-palate.
