Kumpeni

Tap to rate

Kumpeni goes back to the community brew at the 2020 Grutkultur festival in Münster, where ten breweries made a gruit together. The current version is seasoned only with hops and wormwood, which went into the cooling wort together with juice and peel of blood and bitter oranges, on a base of Münstersch Alt. The beer then aged two and a half years in red wine barrels. It shows a fine herbal bitterness and orange oil over a vinous, tart body, with a dry, aromatic finish.

◌ Aroma

Citrus oils emerge prominently—blood orange and bitter orange peel create a bright, fresh counterpoint to the herbal character. Wormwood and noble hops contribute a refined, slightly spiced bitterness that sits beneath the fruit notes. A subtle vinous undercurrent from the red wine barrel aging adds complexity without dominating the nose.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with tart, citrus-forward character balanced by the underlying Münstersch Alt base malt's gentle sweetness. Fine herbal bitterness unfolds through the mid-palate, where orange oil and wormwood interplay with dry, tannic notes from the wine barrel maturation. The body is lean and vinous—more quenching than rich—with a peppery spice that builds toward the finish.

◑ Finish

Dry and aromatic, with lingering herbal bitterness and orange oil notes that fade gradually. A subtle astringency from both wormwood and barrel aging leaves the palate refreshed rather than heavy, encouraging another sip.
