🌍 Belgium · Oud Bruin · One of 6 Oud Bruins in hopIQ

The first beer Omer Vander Ghinste brought to market in 1892, originally sold as Ouden Tripel; after several name changes the brewery returned to its 1892 name in 2012, with a label based on a poster from the early 1920s. A top-fermented brew of barley malt, wheat, caramel malt and hops is blended with spontaneously fermented beer aged at least 18 months in oak foeders. Deep red-brown in the glass, it smells of red fruit and caramel and balances sweetness against a soft acidity, finishing refreshing and thirst-quenching.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for VanderGhinste Roodbruin

◌ Aroma

Red fruit notes—cherry and plum—emerge first, supported by gentle caramel sweetness from the malt bill. Behind these sits a soft acetic note from the oak-aged spontaneous fermentation, adding complexity without assertiveness. The overall nose is inviting and balanced rather than aggressive.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with residual sweetness and those red fruit notes, then transitions into a subtle tannic structure from the oak contact and wood-aging. Low bitterness (15 IBU) allows the interplay of caramel Malz and bright acidity to dominate, creating a nuanced middle that never feels cloying despite the initial sweetness.

◑ Finish

The finish is refreshing and thirst-quenching, with the acidity cutting through residual sweetness and leaving a clean, gently dry aftertaste. The conclusion is medium in length and inviting rather than lingering.
