🌍 Belgium · Belgian Pale Ale · One of 26 Belgian Pale Ales in hopIQ

Père Noël is De Ranke's Christmas beer, launched in the mid-1990s when the brewery took its name, and released each winter. The brewery calls it a bitter Christmas ale, and where most Belgian winter beers go rich and sweet, this one is an amber, top-fermented ale of pale, Munich and caramel malts, hopped with Brewers Gold and Hallertau and finished with a small addition of liquorice. Crusty bread, caramel and grassy, resinous hops open the aroma. The palate adds black pepper, a touch of orange zest and a faint anise note before a long, spicy bitterness closes it out.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with earthy, crusty bread notes underscored by soft caramel sweetness from the Munich and caramel malts. Grassy and resinous hop character emerges from the Brewers Gold and Hallertau, lending a herbaceous complexity. A subtle licorice thread runs beneath, hinting at the brewery's signature finishing touch without dominating the profile.

◐ Taste

The palate entry is smooth and balanced, with warm caramel and pale malt flavors developing quickly. Mid-palate brings black pepper spice and a delicate orange zest note, layering complexity over the malt foundation. The finish transitions into a long, spicy bitterness driven by the Edelhopfen, building steadily rather than fading abruptly.

◑ Finish

The finish is lengthy and dry, with the spicy bitterness lingering on the palate well after swallowing. Residual warmth from the 7% alcohol and faint licorice undertones provide a measured, sophisticated closure.
