Razende Swaen

Tap to rate

A deep-blond, top-fermented organic tripel with a spicy aroma and a powerful malt character, a light hop bitterness and a firm, spicy finish. It has been brewed since the brewery's start in 1997. The name merges two lost Utrecht breweries: De Swaen, active from 1492 to 1670, and Le Lion Furieux, the raging lion, from 1811 to 1814.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with rich malt sweetness and a soft, warming alcohol presence that builds gradually. Mid-palate shows the characteristic spice and herbal complexity, followed by a measured hop bitterness (42 IBU) that balances without overwhelming the malt foundation. The structure feels full-bodied and complete, with flavors of grain, honey, and subtle fruit notes weaving throughout.

Serve at 9–12°C

Serve at 10–13°C in a goblet. The yeast character and carbonation are the stars — cold would suppress both.

Goblet

The wide mouth and heavy base promote head formation and channel rich aromatics toward the nose. Traditional for Belgian strong ales.

Drink within 2 years. Some complexity develops with age but the yeast character is best relatively fresh.
