Straffe Hendrik Heritage

Tap to rate

Straffe Hendrik Heritage is the Quadrupel after at least a year in oak barrels: new American and French wood plus casks that held whisky, rum, Bordeaux or Calvados. Tannin meets the special malts, joined by the Quadrupel's spiciness and bitterness, a subtle wood note, liquorice and dark fruit such as raisins, prunes and figs. Every year the brewers pick a new master blend; 11%, bottled once a year in a limited edition.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with dark fruit character—raisins, prunes, figs—layered beneath woody notes from extended barrel maturation. Spice from the yeast and grain emerges in the mid-palate, alongside subtle liquorice and vanilla. A gentle alcohol warmth supports without overwhelming the carefully aged oak from American, French, whisky, rum, Bordeaux, and Calvados casks.

◐ Taste

Entry is full and rich, with tannins from new wood meeting the malty sweetness of the base Quadrupel. Mid-palate delivers concentrated dark fruit, spice, and dried stone fruit, with the oak providing structure rather than dominance. Bitterness develops with restraint—25 IBU allows the complexity to unfold—finishing dry with a lingering tannic grip and subtle roasted character.

◑ Finish

The finish is long and warming, with alcohol adding gentle heat without harshness. Tannin and liquorice persist, complemented by fading dark fruit notes and a memory of barrel wood.
