Capital Porter

Tap to rate

A London-style porter inspired by 18th-century recipes. Crystal, chocolate, black and Munich malt over extra pale barley make it rich and malty, with dark chocolate, roasted coffee, toffee and a little toasted bread. Pilgrim, Cascade and Goldings supply a moderate bitterness and an earthy, lightly herbal edge that keeps the sweetness in check. On keg it is served with nitrogen, which gives a creamier, smoother pour than the cask version.

◎ Appearance

Deep mahogany to opaque black in color, with minimal light transmission through the glass. The nitrogen serve produces a thick, creamy tan head with excellent retention and dense lacing down the sides of the glass. The pour itself is notably smooth and cascading, a hallmark of the nitrogen carbonation system.

◐ Taste

Entry is full and malty, with rich crystal and chocolate malt flavors establishing the core. The mid-palate develops roasted coffee and dark chocolate complexity, while a moderate bitterness from Cascade and Pilgrim hops provides structure and prevents sweetness from dominating. The finish is dry and slightly astringent, with lingering coffee and a hint of mineral character.

◑ Finish

The aftertaste is medium in length, fading from coffee and toffee into a clean, slightly earthy dryness. No harsh edges or cloying sweetness remains.

Serve at 10–13°C. Too cold mutes the roasted complexity that makes a good porter worth drinking slowly.
