HOPIQ SCORE

The Best French Pale Ales

13 beers from 13 breweries · Ranked by style authenticity — not marketing

These rankings are dynamic. As more people rate, match and like beers on hopIQ, community signals will increasingly shape the results alongside style authenticity and award recognition.

French craft Pale Ale is stylistically thin. Of the 13 French Pale Ales on this ranking, 12 are American Pale Ale in style, with a single Breton Brown Ale as the only clearly-regional outlier. That homogeneity reflects a broader truth about French craft brewing: the American Pale Ale template was adopted almost as-is when French craft producers built modern IPA and Pale Ale lines in the mid-2010s, without the sub-style experimentation visible in Italian or German craft scenes of similar size.

The hopIQ ranking captures what exists honestly. Ninkasi (Lyon), Fauve Craft Bière (Paris), La Perle Toulousaine (Toulouse), Micro Brasserie de l'Arquebuse (Dijon — La Beergundy), and Brewpub La Filature anchor the scene. Brasserie Lancelot in Brittany brings the one non-American entry (Telenn Du, a Breton Brown Ale that overlaps stylistically with darker Pale Ale territory). French Pale Ale is a real category but smaller and less distinctive than French IPA or the country's stronger Farmhouse tradition.

How this ranking works
The hopIQ Score weights style authenticity (80%), user engagement (10%), notability (10%), and award history. Active, in-production beers only — non-alcoholic excluded. No paid placement — order follows the data alone. Ranking spans 13 beers from 13 breweries.
