Black Lightning pours opaque and dark, presenting the visual density of a stout despite its IPA classification. A creamy head sits firmly atop the liquid, with substantial retention and fine lacing around the glass. The SRM of 30 delivers a deep black-brown hue that allows no light penetration.

◌ Aroma

The nose is dominated by the assertive character of a full-bodied American IPA, with Willamette, Cascade, Centennial, Chinook and Summit hops contributing herbal and citrus notes across the olfactory range. Supporting the hops is a restrained dark malt base offering subtle coffee and dark chocolate undertones, neither roasted nor astringent. The interplay creates an approachable aroma that bridges the hop-forward profile with gentle malt complexity.

◐ Geschmack

Entry presents bold hop bitterness that remains rounded rather than sharp, a result of the adjusted water profile that tempers the 56 IBU into a smooth expression. The mid-palate carries forward coffee and dark chocolate notes from the malt bill, lending body and subtle sweetness without astringency or roast harshness. Hop flavour integrates throughout, allowing the drinker to experience both the resinous Edelhopfen character and the supporting malt in balance.

The finish is dry and moderately long, with hop bitterness gradually receding to reveal lingering coffee and chocolate notes. Carbonation supports a clean exit without residual sweetness.
