Riedenburger Brauhaus was established in 1866 when Michael Krieger purchased an existing brewery in Riedenburg in the Altmühl valley of Bavaria, and the Krieger family has run it ever since — now in the eighth generation. Facing competition from larger breweries in the 1980s, the family chose to specialise in organic and sustainable production, converting to Bioland ecological standards from 1989 onwards. In 1994 the brewery became the first in Bavaria — and the second in all of Germany — to brew entirely according to certified organic principles. Riedenburger Brauhaus is also noted for brewing beers with ancient grains such as einkorn, spelt, and emmer wheat.
