Privatbrauerei Wittingen brews in the small town of Wittingen in eastern Lower Saxony. Its brewing rights go back to 1429, when the town chronicle records payment for a barrel of Wittinger beer. For five centuries the Stackmann family ran the business; after Ernst Stackmann died in 1938, it passed through an adopted niece to the Schulz-Hausbrandt family, who still own it. Brewing moved from the old house on the market square to today's site in 1908, and in 2010 the owners also took over Hannover's Herrenhäuser brewery.
