Adolf Hüppe founded the brewery in 1863 just outside Detmold's town walls, in a neo-Gothic building that has been a listed monument since 1986. The fifth generation runs it today: since 1995 Renate Strate with her daughters Friederike, a master brewer, and Simone. The beers are made with real hops and natural malt, without artificial extracts or flavours. The brewery taproom, Strate's Brauhaus, sits in a half-timbered house on Lange Straße.
