Mescan Brewery
Mescan Brewery works on a farm at Kilsallagh, in the foothills of Croagh Patrick near Westport, County Mayo. Two veterinary surgeons, Cillian Ó Móráin from Ireland and Bart Adons from Belgium, spent three years brewing on a 50-litre kit in a garage, then built a 1,000-litre brewhouse from recycled milk tanks in a converted shed; the first beer was sold in 2014. The range keeps to Belgian styles, brewed with spring water, matured for two to three months, unfiltered and unpasteurised. Adons returned to Belgium in 2021, and Ó Móráin runs the brewery today.

How we measure this
Two thresholds are at work here:
- The signature list shows notes that recur in at least 6% of this brewery's beers. A low bar — enough to flag a pattern, not high enough to call it an exclusive trait.
- The peer comparison below shows only notes where this brewery's coverage differs from similar breweries by at least 20 percentage points. A higher bar — enough to call a real difference, not a nudge.
A note can appear on the signature list without appearing in the peer comparison: it recurs here, but similar breweries do the same thing.
Spéartha Dorcha
Their beers place in the Top 77% of the catalogue on average, across 12 ranked beers. One clear standout well ahead of the rest.
