Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei in Bad Köstritz, Thuringia, traces its brewing back to 1543, when the local Erbschenke was first documented. From 1806 it operated as the princely brewery; in 1875 Rudolf Zersch leased it and modernised it with the Bohemian brewmaster Carl Holomoucky. Nationalised in 1948, it was one of the few East German breweries producing for export. Bitburger took full ownership in April 1991 and launched Köstritzer Schwarzbier nationally in 1993.
