Gordon Biersch Brewing Company runs a production brewery and packaging plant in San Jose's Japantown, opened in 1997 to take the brand's German-style lagers into retail. The name goes back to a brewpub that Munich-trained engineer Dan Gordon and restaurateur Dean Biersch opened in Palo Alto in 1988. The restaurants were sold in 1999 and are a separate company today; in 2019 an investor group led by its co-founder regained majority control of the brewery, where most of the volume is contract work for other brands. All beers follow the Reinheitsgebot.
