Honey Porter

Tap to rate

An auburn-red porter finished with honey, with honey aromas and flavours of honey, chocolate and hints of vanilla. Adding such extras, fruit included, goes back to brewing practice from before the nineteenth century, which the Suffolk brewery revisits in a few of its special beers. The brewery's oval 500 ml bottle is modelled on an eighteenth-century gin bottle.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Honey Porter

◎ Appearance

Auburn-red body with dense, tan head that clings to the glass in distinct rings of lacing. The beer presents itself with good clarity despite its deep color, and moderate carbonation supports a stable, long-lasting foam collar. The 500 ml oval bottle, modeled on eighteenth-century gin vessels, frames the beer's warm, ruby-tinged hue effectively.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with pronounced honey notes—floral, slightly waxy—layered over dark roasted malt and cocoa powder. Beneath these sits a gentle vanilla undertone and hints of dried dark fruit, while faint coffee and subtle woody notes round out the bouquet. The honey integration is seamless rather than cloying, speaking to careful balance in adjunct use.

◐ Taste

Entry brings gentle honey sweetness that gives way to rich chocolate and roasted malt character across the mid-palate. The 33 IBU are restrained and refined, providing structure without dominance; vanilla whispers through, while coffee and dark fruit notes add dimension. The body is smooth and full without heaviness, allowing honey to remain present without becoming saccharine.

◑ Finish

The finish is warm, lingering, and slightly sweet, with honey notes persisting alongside fading cocoa and roasted grain. The aftertaste leaves a soft, malty residue on the palate without astringency.

Serve at 10–13°C. Too cold mutes the roasted complexity that makes a good porter worth drinking slowly.

Drink within 6–12 months for best results. Baltic Porters can be aged longer.
