Purity Session IPA

Tap to rate

Purity's Session IPA began as a summer seasonal and stayed in the range; it was also the first of the brewery's beers to be certified gluten-free. It is infused with real grapefruit peel, which gives a bright, zesty citrus note on top of the tropical fruit the brewery describes in the hop aroma. The beer is left unfiltered. At 50 IBU the bitterness is firm for a beer of 4.5%. At the World Beer Awards 2019 it was named the United Kingdom's country winner among session IPAs.

◎ Appearance

Pale golden hue with a luminous quality typical of the style. The beer presents a light, natural haze from its unfiltered character, which catches the light pleasantly. A fine white head forms readily and clings to the glass with delicate Schaumhaftung, revealing bright carbonation throughout.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with prominent grapefruit peel, delivering a bright zesty character that cuts cleanly through the glass. Beneath this citrus foundation lies a tropical fruit note—mango and passionfruit suggestions—lifted by crisp Edelhopfen character. The overall impression is refreshing and summery, with no yeast or malt bulk to weigh the aromatics.

◐ Taste

Entry is crisp and lively, with citrus and tropical fruit flavors taking immediate hold on the palate. The mid-palate reveals a firm bitterness—50 IBU makes itself known on a beer of this body—balanced by a touch of orange character and enough residual sweetness to prevent harshness. The finish remains dry and hoppy, with no cloying malt presence.

◑ Finish

The finish is clean and moderately dry, with the bitterness lingering into the aftertaste without becoming aggressive. A pleasant grapefruit and hop character persists gently, inviting another sip.

Serve at 7–10°C

Serve well-chilled. Session IPAs are at their best cold — the lower ABV means less warmth to balance the hops.

Tulip glass

The curved shape concentrates hop aromas and supports a thick head. Essential for aromatic ales and IPAs where the nose is half the experience.

Drink fresh. Session IPAs are brewed to be consumed young — the hops are at their best now.
