Pure UBU

Tap to rate

Pure UBU is the amber ale Purity has brewed since its first year, named after a dog and pronounced 'oo-boo'. Pale, crystal and roasted malts give a copper-amber beer with caramel, toffee and a touch of toast, and the brewery itself describes dark fruit notes and a sweeter finish. A citrus hop accent sits on top of the malt and keeps the beer from turning heavy; the bitterness is moderate and rounds off a smooth, malty close. It is the strongest of the three original cask ales.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with warm caramel and toffee notes, supported by a subtle toasted malt foundation that hints at darker grains. Citrus hops provide a fresh, zesty accent that prevents the malt sweetness from becoming cloying, while low but detectable dark fruit esters add depth and complexity. The overall impression is balanced and approachable, neither assertively hoppy nor heavily malt-forward.

◐ Taste

Entry is smooth and malty, with immediate notes of caramel and toffee that establish the beer's gentle character. The mid-palate maintains good body without heaviness, as citrus hop bitterness (36 IBU) cuts cleanly through the sweet malt backbone, creating an engaging tension. A whisper of toast rounds the palate, while the finish leans toward a slightly sweet, malty closure rather than dry hop bite.

◑ Finish

The finish is medium in length, fading gracefully with lingering notes of caramel and a touch of toast. A gentle, measured bitterness persists without asserting itself, allowing the malty sweetness to have the final word.
