Svatováclavský Speciál

Tap to rate

A strong, semi-dark lager brewed each year for the feast of St Wenceslas, patron saint of the brewery. Pilsner, Munich, caramel and special caramel malts plus a colouring malt give it a typical ruby colour, and the Czech hop variety Rubín, alongside Harmonie, was chosen to echo the symbolism of spilled blood.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Svatováclavský Speciál

◎ Appearance

A deep ruby hue dominates the glass, lending this lager its distinctive semi-dark character. The head is dense and persistent, with fine lacing that clings to the glass walls as the beer is consumed. Clarity is good, and carbonation appears measured—neither aggressive nor flat.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with pronounced caramel and toasted Malz notes, underpinned by a subtle dark fruit character that echoes stone fruits and dried plums. Herbal Edelhopfen—particularly the Rubín and Harmonie varieties—weave through, adding a gentle spice and a whisper of noble complexity without overwhelming the malt foundation.

◐ Taste

Entry is full-bodied and malty, with immediate caramel sweetness followed by layers of dark fruit complexity that linger across the mid-palate. The spicy-herbal hop character emerges cleanly, balancing the residual sweetness with a dry, crisp bite. Bitterness is restrained yet present—44 IBU provides structure without aggression, allowing the Malz character to remain central.

◑ Finish

The finish is refreshing and moderately long, with the herbal hop character receding to reveal a clean, dry aftertaste grounded in Malz and subtle dark fruit. A gentle warmth from the 5.8% ABV lingers pleasantly without heat or harshness.
