Holgate ESB

◎ Appearance

A copper-red ale of medium clarity, built on a foundation of English crystal and roast malts. The head is generous and persistent, clinging to the glass with fine lacing as the beer settles. Carbonation is moderate and well-integrated, lending a soft effervescence without aggressive bubble action.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with warm biscuit and toffee notes from the malt bill, layered with candied citrus and a subtle peppery earthiness from Fuggles and Goldings hops. There is no harsh aggressiveness; instead, a balanced interplay between caramelized sweetness and gentle pithy orange zest. The overall character is inviting and approachable, without aromatic complexity that would distract from the malt-forward profile.

◐ Taste

Entry is soft and round, with immediate malt character—bready, toasty notes give way to candied sweetness and a mouth-coating caramel presence. Mid-palate remains malt-dominant, carrying orange marmalade and a whisper of spice. Bitterness arrives in the mid-to-late palate, a pithy orange bitterness from the noble hops that sits neatly atop the sweetness rather than overwhelming it, holding through the finish without astringency.

◑ Finish

The finish is dry and measured, with lingering malt-derived toffee notes and a gentle herbal-peppery hop edge. The beer does not cloy despite its sweetness in the mid-palate; instead, it resolves cleanly into a soft, warming aftertaste.
