Deep mahogany to near-black in the glass, with excellent clarity showing the beer's density and weight. A thick, tan head forms on the pour and clings persistently to the glass walls, demonstrating strong malt structure and protein content. Carbonation is restrained, appropriate for a barrel-aged barleywine of this magnitude.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with roasted coffee and dark cocoa, layered with caramel sweetness and toasted Malz character. Behind these come raisin and dried dark fruit notes, while the ex-whisky barrel maturation adds a prominent oak and subtle spirit edge that frames rather than dominates. The alcohol is present but not sharp, warming without harshness.

◐ Taste

Entry is full-bodied and lush, with coffee and roasted grain hitting the palate immediately alongside sweet caramel and toffee. The mid-palate expands with dark chocolate, raisins, and a gentle warming alcohol that contributes to rather than detracts from the overall smoothness. Bitterness is minimal and restrained, serving as a balancing thread rather than a dominant note, while oak tannins add subtle structure without astringency.

The finish is long and lingering, with coffee and oak lingering on the palate for several minutes. A warming alcohol note persists gently, while residual caramel sweetness and dark fruit fade slowly, leaving a dry, toasted grain sensation at the very end.
