🌍 Germany · Dunkelweizen · One of 34 Dunkelweizens in hopIQ

Erdinger Dunkel began as a present: the brewmasters created it for owner Werner Brombach's 50th birthday in 1989, and he put it on the market a year later. Dark wheat and barley malts plus roasted barley malt give a deep, glossy brown beer with a creamy head. The nose shows roast, dark chocolate and a hint of plum; the palate is malt-led, with notes of fresh farmhouse bread, a subtle nuttiness and a fine bitterness, balanced between light sweetness and a refreshing finish that lingers. Original gravity 12.8 °P.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with pronounced roasted malt and dark chocolate notes, backed by subtle hints of plum and stone fruit from the wheat and yeast character. Fresh farmhouse bread aromas emerge beneath, suggesting a gentle toasted grain foundation without any sharp or burnt qualities. The overall impression is warm and inviting, with roasted notes dominating over any spice or phenolic wheat characteristics.

◐ Taste

The palate is firmly malt-driven, opening with soft bread and toast flavors that build into a gentle nuttiness across the mid-palate. Dark chocolate and roasted grain provide backbone without heaviness, while a subtle sweetness balances a fine, restrained bitterness. The finish arrives clean and refreshing, with the wheat character lending a crisp quality that prevents any cloying sensation.

◑ Finish

The aftertaste lingers pleasantly with residual roasted malt and chocolate notes, gradually fading into a refreshing, slightly dry conclusion. The finish is medium in length, leaving the palate cleansed rather than coated.
