🌍 Spain · Fruited Sour · One of 37 Fruited Sours in hopIQ

Named after the Serra de Bèrnia, the ridge that watches over Altea, this fruit sour was first brewed in 2023 and won gold at the Barcelona Beer Challenge that year. It is mixed-fermented with Brettanomyces and aged in oak barrels on cherries, raspberries and blueberries. It pours deep ruby with a light pink head. Tart red fruit meets the wild notes of Brett, with leather, farmyard and cider-apple hints and a touch of wood. Sharp acetic and lactic acidity, a light body and a very dry finish follow.

AI-generated sensory profile for Bèrnia

◎ Appearance

Bèrnia pours a deep ruby red with excellent clarity and a delicate light pink head. The carbonation is gentle, creating fine bubbles that produce modest but persistent lacing on the glass. The color reflects the berry fruit at its core—a striking visual marker of this wine-like sour ale.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with bright red fruit—tart cherry and raspberry dominate, layered beneath wild Brett character. Leather, farmyard funk, and subtle cider-apple notes emerge on deeper sniffing, with gentle oak influence and a mineral whisper underneath. The acidity is apparent even in the bouquet, sharp and inviting.

◐ Taste

Entry is immediately tart, driven by sharp acetic and lactic acidity that cuts cleanly across the palate. The mid-palate reveals the complexity of mixed fermentation: Brett brings earthy, funky notes while the cherry, raspberry, and blueberry fruit remains present if somewhat austere. Body is deliberately light, allowing the acidic backbone and wood tannins to define the experience.

◑ Finish

The finish is very dry and lingers with a peppery, slightly leathery aftertaste. Acidity persists without becoming harsh, fading to a clean, mineral conclusion that invites the next sip.
