El Capitan

United Kingdom·Foreign Extra Stout
Tap to rate

El Capitan was the first stout from Bullhouse and the first beer the brewery sold commercially. The export-strength stout rests on rich roasted malt, from which notes of dark chocolate, vanilla and caramel develop. The brewery calls it bold and smooth, full-bodied without feeling heavy. It was conceived for the colder months but stays in the range all year.

◎ Appearance

Deep garnet-black in color, nearly opaque when held to light. The head forms dense and persistent, leaving substantial lacing along the glass. Carbonation is gentle, creating fine bubbles that sustain the foam structure throughout the pour.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with smooth, full-bodied malt sweetness balanced by moderate bitterness at mid-palate. Dark chocolate and vanilla notes unfold across the tongue, complemented by hints of caramel. The 60 IBU provides restraint rather than aggression, allowing the complex roasted malt profile to remain prominent.

◑ Finish

The finish lingers with dry roasted character and a faint cocoa dryness. Warmth from the 7.5% ABV becomes apparent in the closing moments without creating harshness.
