Tap to rate

Naturally cloudy and dark yellow, with fine-pored foam, an intense barley bitterness and a fuller body than ordinary organic Zwickl. Brewed in the 1929 brewhouse from the historic Heines Haisa barley, regrown from a handful of seed from the Linz gene bank, and Malling hops, the variety that returned to the Mühlviertel after 1948. Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Heines Urgersten Zwickl

◎ Appearance

Deep golden-yellow with natural cloudiness from suspended yeast, presenting a visibly hazy body that catches the light warmly. The fine-pored foam head builds readily and clings to the glass with persistent lacing, characteristic of a naturally carbonated lager held in cellar conditions. Sediment and particulate matter remain suspended throughout, giving the beer a lived-in, unpasteurized appearance.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with a pronounced barley maltiness, grounded and earthy rather than sweet, complemented by subtle herbal and slightly resinous notes from the heritage Malling hop variety. A clean, yeasty undertone emerges without any sulfur or off-character, suggesting a controlled fermentation that allows the grain and hops to speak clearly. There is no fruit or ester dominance—instead, the aromatics remain crisp and grain-forward, inviting deeper exploration.

◐ Taste

Entry is full-bodied and slightly bready, with a malty core that unfolds into an intense and lingering barley bitterness—not aggressive, but substantial and authentic to the style. Mid-palate develops a dry, slightly resinous quality from the Malling hops, underscored by the weight of the historic Heines Haisa barley, which adds depth without sweetness. The finish dries considerably, with the bitter notes extending into a clean, almost mineral-like aftertaste that speaks to the beer's terroir.

◑ Finish

The finish is decidedly dry and persistent, with hop bitterness and barley tannins lingering on the palate for several minutes. No cloying sweetness remains; instead, a clean, slightly astringent dryness invites another sip.
