Joehoe

Tap to rate

A blond Sunshine Ale (5.6%) of barley, wheat, oats and hops, fruity and bitter. The name echoes the oehoe, the second-largest owl in the world: a wingspan of more than 180 cm and a call that gave it its name, (J)oehoe! Seeing one is something special; in 2014 the Dutch breeding population was put at 21 to 23 pairs. A seasonal beer, back every year. It is brewed in the kettles of Jopen in Haarlem.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with pronounced fruity esters—ripe citrus and stone fruit notes—layered over a subtle wheat character. Noble hops contribute a clean, herbal undertone with a whisper of floral refinement. The overall impression is dry and inviting, with no harsh edges.

◐ Taste

On the palate, Joehoe delivers a harmonious balance between fruit-forward entry and a moderate, well-integrated bitterness that builds gently into the mid-palate. The wheat and oats provide a soft, slightly creamy mouthfeel, while the noble hops introduce a crisp, dry finish that prevents the beer from becoming sweet. The 30 IBU bitterness feels proportional, refreshing rather than assertive.

◑ Finish

The finish is clean and refreshing, with the bitterness fading gracefully into a dry aftertaste. A lingering whisper of citrus and grain persists briefly without becoming cloying.

Serve at 6–8°C

Cold enough to sharpen the hop aroma without numbing the palate. Around 7–9°C keeps the citrus and pine vivid without losing bitterness definition.

Pint glass

The classic — versatile, comfortable to hold and keeps the beer cool. No frills, no distractions: just the beer.

Drink fresh — hop aroma fades fast. Best within 3 months of canning or bottling.
