🌍 Germany · Doppelbock · One of 42 Doppelbocks in hopIQ

A dark doppelbock of chestnut brown, poured only between November and the end of January. A three-mash process, four malts and sixteen weeks of lagering build a rounded, full, malt-dominant palate. Despite the high gravity there is little of the heavy sweetness common to the style: the first sip is mildly full, with a coffee note that takes over towards the finish. The nose adds roasted malt, dried plum and a touch of caramel under a firm cream-coloured head. Brewed at 18.5 degrees Plato.

◎ Appearance

Deep chestnut brown with excellent clarity, presenting a dense, cream-coloured head that adheres persistently to the glass. ◌ Aroma

The nose leads with roasted malt and dried plum, complemented by subtle caramel notes that emerge beneath the head. Sixteen weeks of lagering have refined the character into a rounded, sophisticated profile without harsh alcohol vapours, allowing the interplay of malt complexity to emerge clearly.

◐ Taste

The first sip arrives mildly full and smooth, with pronounced malty sweetness that never becomes cloying despite the 18.5 °Plato gravity. A distinct coffee note develops through the mid-palate and carries into the finish, providing roasted depth and structure that prevents the beer from settling into one-dimensional sweetness.

◑ Finish

The finish is clean and moderately long, with the coffee character persisting as the primary note. Alcohol warmth remains subtle at 6.7% ABV, allowing the roasted malt and dried fruit complexity to linger without astringency.

What is a Doppelbock?

Bocks are strong German lagers with 6.5–7.5% ABV. Rich malt sweetness — toast, chocolate, caramel — with low bitterness and a warming finish.

Finding a similar Doppelbock

hopIQ matches by flavor profile — not just style label. A beer with the same malty, roasted, full-bodied character as Ayinger Winterbock will score highly even if brewed in a different country or under a different sub-style name.
