Big Top Bitter

Tap to rate

Big Top Bitter was brewed for Anspach & Hobday's twelfth anniversary in 2026. Brewer Richard Ekins based it on the hoppy bitters of the Black Country and Shropshire from his home in the West Midlands: Maris Otter loaded with crystal and amber malts for a rich backbone, and fresh whole-leaf East Kent Goldings packed into the mash tun, used as a hop back. Dark berry and fruitcake aromas meet caramel and biscuit notes from the malt.

◐ Taste

Entry reveals the rich malt foundation with caramel, toffee, and biscuit flavors, followed by a measured bitter backbone from the 28 IBU Goldings charge in the mash tun hop back. The mid-palate maintains good body and sweetness balance, with the bittering hops providing structure without overwhelming the delicate malt character.

◑ Finish
