Weisses Bräuhaus Kelheim is the oldest wheat beer brewery in Bavaria, founded in 1607 when Duke Maximilian I built a dedicated weissbier brewery in Kelheim as part of the Wittelsbach royal monopoly on wheat beer. Wheat beer has been brewed there continuously since its founding. In 1927, Georg Schneider IV of the Munich brewing family G. Schneider & Sohn expanded into Kelheim, and from 1928 the Schneider family has owned the brewery. After Allied bombing destroyed the Munich facilities in 1944, Kelheim became the family's primary production site and headquarters, a role it retains today.
