König-Brauerei was founded in 1858 by Theodor König in Beeck, then a rural parish on the Lower Rhine and now a district of Duisburg. Trading as the Bayrische Bierbrauerei Theodor König, he brought bottom-fermented beer to an area where top-fermented styles were the norm and supplied workers from the surrounding collieries. In 1911 the company first sold a more heavily hopped lager under the name König Pilsener, which became a nationally known pils brand from the 1960s on. Since 2004 it has belonged to the Bitburger Braugruppe.
