Privatbrauerei Herrenhausen was founded in 1868 in the Herrenhausen district of Hannover, originally under the name Brauerei Wölfler & Wedekind Herrenhausen. The company became a joint-stock company in 1880, and in 1884 it introduced Pilsner-style brewing methods. The brewery underwent insolvency proceedings in 2010 and was subsequently acquired by the Schulz-Hausbrandt family, owners of Privatbrauerei Wittingen, for approximately 16 million euros. It is described as the oldest private brewery still in existence in Hannover.
