Northern Greece's independent regional brewery — Vergina Brewery (Macedonian Thrace Brewery) was founded in 1998 in Komotini, Thrace, and has grown into a significant independent Greek producer. Named after the ancient Macedonian city of Vergina (home of Philip II of Macedon), the brewery produces a range of lagers and speciality beers and is one of the few Greek breweries not owned by an international conglomerate. Vergina beers are widely distributed across Greece and exported to the Greek diaspora market.
