Engelszell Abbey was founded in 1293 on the Danube near the German border. In May 2012, the International Trappist Association approved Engelszell as the 9th Authentic Trappist brewery in the world — the only one in Austria. Brews on a 15hl brewhouse with 2,000 hl/year output using local Mühlviertel hops, Austrian Pilsner malt, and Alsatian wine yeast. Monastery honey used in Gregorius and Benno.
