The Sternburg brand is rooted in 1822, when Leipzig wool merchant Maximilian Speck von Sternburg acquired the Lützschena estate near Leipzig, which included a brewery. After World War II the brewery was nationalized under East Germany, and by 1990 it employed 500 workers producing up to 500,000 hectoliters annually. The original Lützschena brewery closed on August 31, 1991 following German reunification. Since 2006 the Sternburg brand has been owned by the Radeberger Group; it remains popular in eastern Germany and its flagship product is Sternburg Export.
