Privatbrauerei Hofmühl was founded in 1492 by Wilhelm von Reichenau, making it one of Bavaria's oldest breweries. The brewery spent more than three centuries under episcopal ownership before being nationalised during the secularisation of 1803. Since 1876 it has been owned by the Emslander family, who continue to run it as the sole brewery in the city of Eichstätt. The brewery is recognised for its sustainable energy practices, saving around 60 percent of its annual energy consumption through solar technology and the Merlin brewing process. It is particularly noted for its Hefeweizen and Helles beers.
