Port City Brewing Company
Port City Brewing Company was founded by Bill and Karen Butcher and opened in February 2011 as the first production brewery to operate in Alexandria, Virginia, since Prohibition. The Butchers — a former fine wine sales manager and an intellectual property attorney — launched the brewery to fill what they saw as a gap in locally produced, high-quality craft beer in the Washington, D.C. area. Port City revived a proud local heritage: the Robert Portner Brewing Company had operated in Alexandria from 1866 until Virginia Prohibition shuttered it in 1915. In 2015, Port City was named Small Brewing Company of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival.
