Pfungstädter Brauerei was founded in 1831 by Justus Hildebrand in the neighbouring village of Hahn, where it operated under the name 'Zum Hirsch'. Due to the need for cooler cellars required for lager production, the brewery relocated to Pfungstadt in 1846. It grew to become one of the largest private breweries in Hesse, reaching a peak production of 473,000 hectoliters in 2004. The brewery remained 100 percent family-owned in the Hildebrand family throughout its history. It closed in 2023, and since then the Pfungstädter brand has been produced under licence by Eder & Heylands Brewery in Großostheim.
