Maine Beer Company was founded in 2009 by brothers David and Daniel Kleban, opening on Industrial Way in Portland, Maine, with a one-barrel brewhouse. The brothers set out to create a company driven by purpose — donating 1% of gross annual sales to environmental nonprofits through the 1% For The Planet program from the very start. After outgrowing the Portland facility, Maine Beer Company moved to a new brewery in Freeport in 2013 and completed a larger production facility there in 2018. Their first beer, Peeper Ale, remains a core offering, and the brewery is well regarded for hop-forward ales including the widely sought Lunch IPA.
