Brauerei Heller was founded in 1991 in Cologne's Kwartier Latäng as one of the city's few house breweries, started by the Heller family, who had run a pub on Roonstraße since 1978. The HELLERS Brauhaus opened beside the brewhouse in 1996. For three decades everything was brewed in organic quality, beginning with a cloudy Wiess, later a Kölsch, an Alt and yearly specials. Rising costs and overdue investment ended in-house brewing in mid-2024. The family still runs the Brauhaus, the Volksgarten beer garden and a summer garden by the Rhine, and sells its Kölsch brewed under contract.
