Augustiner-Bräu is Munich's oldest brewery, founded in 1328 — and the only major Oktoberfest brewery still entirely independently owned. Run by the Edith-Haberland-Wagner Foundation to prevent any corporate takeover, Augustiner maintains its own Tennenmälzerei (floor malting) and two artesian wells at 190 and 230 metres depth. The Lagerbier Hell — affectionately called 'Gustl' — is Munich's most beloved everyday beer. Unlike most breweries, Augustiner produces no alcohol-free beers, keeping its focus exclusively on traditional Bavarian styles.
