Space Is the Place

Tap to rate

Complex and full-bodied, with some tropical fruit in aroma and taste: this bourbon barrel-aged sour ale began as a Belgian-inspired beer, think Rochefort 6, and soured in bourbon barrels for almost two years. It was then dry hopped with Idaho 7 and Talus. The name comes from Sun Ra's 1972 Afrofuturist film. 6.7% ABV.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with bright tropical stone fruit—mango and peach—layered beneath subtle oak and vanilla from the bourbon barrel aging. Idaho 7 and Talus hops contribute herbal and citrus notes that frame the fruity foundation without dominating. A gentle tartness underlies the entire profile, inviting closer inspection.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with pronounced sourness balanced by the beer's full body, which provides roundness and texture without heaviness. Mid-palate brings forward the tropical fruit and oak complexity, while Idaho 7 and Talus hops add a herbal, slightly piney bitterness that extends through the center. The 10 IBU ensures bitterness remains supporting rather than assertive, allowing the sour and fruity elements to dominate.

◑ Finish

The finish is clean and relatively dry, with the sourness lingering pleasantly on the palate alongside fading oak tannins. A light tartness persists without becoming sharp, creating a refreshing aftertaste that invites another sip.
