SPI

Tap to rate

A double IPA that bursts with pineapple and passion fruit, built on an enormous quantity of Citra and Simcoe hops and a double dry-hop, designed for dedicated hop lovers. SPI was born in 2020 and draws its inspiration from the regattas of Santander. It is one of Smach's four permanent beers, unfiltered and carbonated naturally.

AI-generated sensory profile for SPI

◎ Appearance

SPI presents a pale golden hue with a slight haze characteristic of an unfiltered Double IPA. The natural carbonation generates a dense, off-white head with excellent retention and fine lacework clinging to the glass. The unfiltered character lends a subtle cloudiness that speaks to its traditional conditioning.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with vivid tropical fruit—dominant pineapple and passion fruit leap forward, courtesy of the substantial Citra and Simcoe hop charge. Resinous and piney undertones emerge beneath the fruit, while a crisp, herbaceous edge keeps the profile clean and focused. A whisper of citrus zest completes the aromatic architecture.

◐ Taste

Entry is full-bodied and refreshing, with pineapple and passion fruit defining the mid-palate. The 80 IBU manifests as a structured, measured bitterness rather than aggressiveness—resinous hop oils coat the mouth while maintaining balance against the malt backbone. Crisp carbonation and a clean finish prevent any cloying sweetness.

◑ Finish

The finish is dry and lingering, with residual hop bitterness and a faint piney note extending the experience. The carbonation lifts the palate, leaving no heaviness and inviting the next sip.

What is a Double IPA?

IPAs are hop-forward ales with 5.5–7.5% ABV and IBU 40–70+. Bold hop aroma — citrus, tropical, resinous — with firm bitterness and a dry, clean finish.

Finding a similar Double IPA

hopIQ matches by flavor profile — not just style label. A beer with the same tropical, hoppy, fruity character as SPI will score highly even if brewed in a different country or under a different sub-style name.
